What does a GEO consultancy engagement include?
A GEO consultancy engagement (same work as AEO) is a bounded hire: a named person diagnoses your site and competitors, ships agreed on-site and off-site work to a published include/exclude, and owns mention rate and citation rate on a locked prompt panel from baseline to retest. It is not a monitoring SaaS subscription, not an unlimited content or PR retainer, and not a promise that you will rank first, lead share of voice, or appear in every AI answer.

MentionBench Consulting LLC sells one offer: AEO/GEO Engagement—people + acceptance criteria + accountability. Inside that Engagement, the method is three layers of client delivery: Diagnosis, On-site improvement, and Bounded off-site—not three public pricing tiers. Assess → Improve → Review are optional narrative aliases that map 1:1 to those layers (Assess=Diagnosis, Improve=On-site, Review=Bounded off-site); they are not three sellable products, and retest lives under baseline → retest—not under the Review alias. Short-cycle site changes and milestone accountability are how that single Engagement runs—not Sprint / Monitor / Defend as separate sellable tiers on a public menu.
What is a GEO / AEO consultancy engagement?
A consultancy engagement is hired execution with an owner, not a product that only scores and suggests.
You lock a relevant prompt panel with the consultant. You get a readiness read on your site plus a one-time competitor contrast, a prioritized fix list, scoped on-site changes, and a capped count of third-party corroboration. Success is defined up front: baseline mention rate and citation rate on those prompts, work shipped to the published bar, then retest after the observation window. Retest is accountability for the before/after—not a guarantee that rates will rise. Public self-case sample form: locked English buying-prompt panel v1 (N=100 · Frozen 2026-07-26 · Before Pending)—client Engagement panels are locked in writing and need not match v1.
AEO and GEO are two names for the same kind of work: earning clear, citable presence in AI answers. Surfaces change; the need for entity clarity and accountable execution does not.
What does Diagnosis include and exclude?
Diagnosis is the first method layer inside Engagement: diagnosing the site and competitors so you know what to change first—and what “done” looks like.
Includes: readiness across existence, structured readability, and cross-platform consistency signals; a one-time competitor mention/share contrast; a gap list and high-leverage fix order. Deliverable: readiness conclusion, competitor gap table, prioritized fix list (actionable and ordered). Acceptance: you can say what to change first, why, and what “done” looks like; the locked prompt panel and baseline are recorded. Diagnosis can be a bounded first step; On-site improvement and Bounded off-site proceed only under written scope expansion.
Does not include: monitoring SaaS or always-on dashboards as the deliverable; a separate monitoring-product tier; exposing an internal tool stack; a full scorecard product; unlimited site rewrites; promises of rank position, SOV #1, every AI answer, or permanent occupancy. Diagnosis tells you where you are blocked and what to ship next—it does not auto-expand later layers without a written agreement.
How do you accept the work?
Acceptance is people + criteria + accountability—not “articles shipped” or “dashboards updated.”
Who owns it: a named MentionBench consultant owns priorities, ships agreed work across the three layers, defines the acceptance bar, and owns baseline → retest on the locked prompt panel. Your team approves scope, grants access as needed, reviews milestones, and keeps product/brand facts accurate across surfaces. Optional tools (research or tracking products you already use) do not replace the Engagement owner.
What “done” looks like: for Diagnosis—you can state first changes, why, and done criteria, with prompts and baseline recorded. For On-site—agreed pages/items meet the bar; scope does not auto-expand. For Bounded off-site—agreed actions are done and sources are checkable. Across the Engagement—mention rate and citation rate are retested on the locked panel after the observation window, against the published include/exclude. Retest is before/after accountability—not a guarantee that rates will rise.
What acceptance is not: an open-ended promise to keep working until rates hit a target; a guarantee of rankings, SOV leadership, every answer, or permanent occupancy; success defined only as content volume or PR packages shipped.
How is this different from an AI visibility dashboard?
A dashboard measures; remediation fixes. Tools that surface mentions, prompts, and scores are useful when your team can execute a clear checklist from the data. They are not the same as a named owner who prioritizes, changes the site and agreed third-party sources, and retests mention and citation rates on locked prompts.
If the bottleneck is insight without ownership, hire an Engagement—not another subscription that stops at a report. For a full side-by-side of tools, content/AEO retainers, and MentionBench, see Compare tools vs hire.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO — do I still need SEO?
AEO and GEO are two labels for the same buyer need: clear, citable presence in AI answers. SEO is still the foundation for most B2B organic pipelines; AI search sits on top of classic search, it does not replace it.
You still need solid SEO foundations—crawlable structure, clear entities, consistent facts. AEO/GEO Engagement extends that work into answer surfaces; it is not “instead of SEO.” Strong existing SEO does not require pretending MentionBench is a full-stack SEO content factory—Engagement can still start with Diagnosis as a bounded first step, with later layers only under written scope expansion. Weak SEO usually means Diagnosis will put structural and consistency fixes early in the on-site layer.
Who is this for / not for?
This is for North American advertising, PR, consulting, and IT SMBs that can change the site but need a named person to say what to measure, where you are blocked, and what to ship next—then deliver diagnosis, on-site, and bounded off-site to a verifiable bar. Best fit when nobody owns “what we do next week,” and you want one Engagement with a published include/exclude—not another insight-only subscription and not an open-ended content machine.
This is not for teams that only need DIY measurement and can execute from a tool checklist; buyers whose budget goal is unlimited articles, always-on PR, or a thought-leadership content shop measured by volume; or anyone seeking monitoring SaaS, a separate monitoring-product tier, guaranteed AI rankings / SOV #1 / every answer / permanent occupancy. If positioning, conversion, or basic site hygiene is broken, fix that first—or expect Diagnosis to say so before broader AI-visibility work.
What happens after Diagnosis?
Diagnosis is not a separate product on a public menu. It can be a bounded first step inside the same AEO/GEO Engagement; later layers proceed only under written scope expansion.
On-site improvement: implement diagnostic priorities—structure (schema / FAQ / entities and related signals) plus cross-platform consistency of wording; content only within the article count agreed in writing for that Engagement (not an unlimited retainer, and not a fixed token minimum that implies almost no work). Deliverable: agreed on-site changes shipped. Acceptance: agreed pages/items meet the bar; scope does not auto-expand.
Bounded off-site: third-party corroboration within the action count agreed in writing (guest posts, relevant links/referring domains, directories, bounded media outreach) plus testimonials/cases with verifiable facts aligned to the site. Deliverable: action list (target URL + type) and execution record within the agreed count. Acceptance: agreed actions done and sources checkable.
Includes across Engagement: the three layers to agreed actions and on-site scope; human ownership and milestone accountability; locked prompt panel with baseline → retest of mention rate and citation rate. Short-cycle site changes and milestone accountability stay inside this one Engagement—they are not Sprint / Monitor / Defend sellable tiers.
Does not include: monitoring SaaS; always-on monitoring; a separate monitoring-product tier; unlimited writing or unlimited PR; a full-industry always-on agency retainer; promises of rank position, SOV #1, appearing in every AI answer, or permanently owning an answer.
FAQ
Should I buy an AI visibility tool or hire a consultant?
Tools produce measurement and outputs; hiring someone is for scoped execution with an owner and a published acceptance bar. MentionBench is the hire path: one AEO/GEO Engagement across diagnosis, on-site improvement, and bounded off-site—then locked-prompt baseline → retest of mention and citation rates. That is not an open-ended promise to keep working until rates hit a target, and not another DIY dashboard. See also Compare tools vs hire.
Is MentionBench an agency retainer or a named consultant?
You get a named consultant accountable for the Engagement—priorities, shipped work, acceptance, and baseline → retest—not a faceless content roster measured by article volume, and not “advisory only with no site changes.” Execution is bounded to the published include/exclude, not an unlimited retainer.
Do you do unlimited content or PR?
No. Content ships only within the article count agreed in writing for that Engagement, inside On-site improvement. Off-site work is a capped action count agreed in writing. Unlimited writing, unlimited PR, and content-factory retainers are outside the offer.
What does success look like—and what do you not promise?
Success is mention rate and citation rate on the locked prompt panel: baseline recorded, work shipped to the published include/exclude, retest after the observation window. Public sample: Panel v1 · N=100 · Frozen 2026-07-26 with Before X/N still Pending until retest. We do not promise rank position, SOV #1, appearing in every AI answer, or permanently owning an answer—and retest is not a guarantee that rates will rise.
I already have Semrush, Profound, or similar—why hire MentionBench?
Those products help with research, prompts, and tracking. They do not replace a person who decides priorities, changes the site and agreed off-site sources to a published bar, then retests mention and citation rates on locked prompts. Keep the tool if it helps; hire when insight without ownership is the bottleneck.
Can I buy Diagnosis alone?
We sell one Engagement. Diagnosis can be the bounded first step: readiness conclusion, competitor gap table, prioritized fix list, and a locked prompt panel with baseline recorded. Later on-site and bounded off-site work expand only by written agreement—they do not auto-become an unlimited retainer, and Diagnosis is not a standalone public pricing tier on the menu.
